More Than a Job: MTC Second-Years Reflect on Their Journeys (Mandy Moore)
1. What drew you to join the Mississippi Teacher Corps?
Dr. Sweeney convinced me to join the Mississippi Teacher Corps. I originally applied to another program. He reached out to me, explaining how MTC would be a complete fit for me. I took a look into the program by visiting the website and began to gain interest quickly. One of the best decisions I have ever made!
2. What was your initial summer like?
My initial summer was different but needed. We had to do virtual teaching for summer school. I enjoyed it because it prepared me for the upcoming school year tremendously. All school districts transitioned to virtual learning because of the pandemic. All administrators were so organized and made the school days run smoothly. I am happy I was able to experience excellence!
3. What about your first year of teaching?
My first year of teaching following the MTC summer was good because I had already been teaching for two years. MTC elevated my craft inside and outside of the classroom.
4. How has your second year of teaching been compared to the first year? Describe your experiences.
My second year teaching following the first year of the MTC program has been excellent! The program taught me new teaching techniques (primarily using technology). I love that I have learned so much from all of my professors.
5. What have you learned about your kids, their families, and the community since joining MTC?
My experience is different. I am from the town I am currently placed in. I know the kids, their families, and the community quite well. My community loves sports!
6. What do you wish more people knew about the teaching profession, your school district, and/or your students and their families?
I would like to discuss the teaching profession. I wish people knew how much a teacher could impact a child's life by just being consistent, caring, and present. Teachers do not just teach. They sometimes have to be a counselor, nurse, coach, etc. The list can go on and on. Teachers play a vital role in children's lives!
7. Reflecting on the last two years, what are you most proud of?
I am proud of my growth! Teaching can become overwhelming at times. I have a saying I say to myself when I feel down. My saying is, “Only the strong survive.” I pride myself on not giving up and pushing when times get hard! I am also proud of how I managed the MTC program and teaching.
